      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Have you seen this pavilion before? It is located at the East Zone open square of Ito Campus. The science students who usually use the west side of the campus probably would not know of this, but this pavilion is no ordinary construct. In fact, it holds a high value of significance that won the praises of the professors and even got the excellence award. That is why it has even got the privilege to be built on university grounds, which proves that there is something special about this.<\/span><\/p>
      \n<p> <\/p>
      \n<h3><b>\u8a2d\u8a08\u80cc\u666f\u30fb\u30a4\u30f3\u30b9\u30d4\u30ec\u30fc\u30b7\u30e7\u30f3 Context and Inspiration<\/b><\/h3>
      \n<p> <\/p>

      \n<p> <\/p>
      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The designers of the pavilion, who were 1st year master\u2019s students, said that only 80% of raw materials are used in construction, whereas the remaining 20% is discarded as wood waste. Thus, their professors have given them a big task of finding ways to increase the usage rate of raw materials by reducing waste. For example, the inner central part of a log is useful in making poles and pillars which are essential for building support. However, in the cutting process, the outer sides of the log (crescent shaped) are being cut out, and these parts are not practical to use as building materials. Of course, there is the option of pulverising them to fine powder to be used as biofuel (which is the usual way of disposal), but the students think that it is such a waste to do so. The students then did some brainstorming of finding new ways of utilising the crescent shaped parts of the log and finally, they came up with a brilliant solution.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><\/span><\/p>

      \n<h3><b>\u69cb\u7bc9\u306e\u767a\u60f3 The Idea<\/b><\/h3>

      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u5f7c\u3089\u304c\u6700\u521d\u306b\u601d\u3044\u3064\u3044\u305f\u306e\u306f\u90e8\u6750\u3092\u7d44\u307f\u7acb\u3066\u3066<\/span><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u67f1\u3068\u3057\u3066\u4f7f\u3046\u6848\u3060\u3063\u305f\u304c\u3001\u5b9f\u969b\u306b\u5efa\u3066\u3066\u307f\u308b\u3068<\/span><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u67f1\u304c\u69cb\u9020\u7684\u306b\u4e0d\u5b89\u5b9a\u3060\u3068\u6c17\u304c\u3064\u3044\u305f\u3002\u305d\u3053\u3067\u3001\u90e8\u6750\u306e\u5186\u5f27\u90e8\u5206\u3092\u4e92\u3044\u306b\u304f\u3063\u3064\u3051\u3066\u6b63\u4e09<\/span><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u89d2\u5f62\u306b\u3059\u308b\u30a2\u30a4\u30c7\u30a2\u304c\u751f\u307e\u308c\u3001\u3053\u308c\u304c\u5927\u6210\u529f\u3057\u305f\u3002\u51fa\u6765\u4e0a\u304c\u3063\u305f\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\u306f\u5b89\u5b9a\u3057\u3066\u304a\u308a\u3001\u69cb\u7bc9<\/span><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u306b\u4f7f\u3048\u305d\u3046\u306a\u3082\u306e\u3067\u3042\u3063\u305f\u3002\u3053\u306e\u4e09\u89d2\u5f62\u3092\u7d44\u307f\u5408\u308f\u305b\u3066\u307f\u306a\u304c\u3089\u767a\u60f3\u3092\u5c55\u958b\u3055\u305b\u305f\u7d50\u679c\u3001\u7dba\u9e97<\/span><span style="font-weight: 400;">\u306a\u6a21\u69d8\u306b\u3082\u306a\u308b\u3053\u3068\u3092\u767a\u898b\u3002\u3053\u308c\u304c\u30d1\u30d3\u30ea\u30aa\u30f3\u306e\u8c61\u5fb4\u7684\u306a\u6a21\u69d8\u3068\u306a\u308b\u306e\u3067\u3042\u3063\u305f\u3002<\/span><\/p>
      \n<p> <\/p>
      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first thing they came up with was combining all the pieces together to form a new pillar, but after some trials they realised that it was structurally unstable, so they came up with another idea. This time, they joined the crescent arcs of the pieces together to form a triangle, which was a success. The formed triangle is structurally stable, which means that it can be used for construction. The beautiful patterns you see on the pavilion is the result of the tessellations of these triangles.<\/span><\/p>

      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, the construction of the pavilion is no simple task. Fortunately, the progress was smooth, and to be precise it took half a year to see the completion of the pavilion (from the spring quarter of 2024 to the beginning of October). To summarise the main processes involved, the triangular pattern is fitted into a big triangular frame, which is then sandwiched by plastic panels to prevent wood decay by water. The finished product will eventually be the building block of the pavilion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

      \n<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, there is another problem. \u201cHow do we use the big triangular units in an open space?\u201d. This was also another issue during the planning, and after lots of trial and errors, the students decided that they will arrange 5 of these triangles together to make a pentagonal pyramid, and they will build the pavilion to completion using each of these pentagonal pyramids.\u00a0 As they start putting their plans into action during the summer, the result is a 12 pyramidal 12 faced structure of the pavilion.<\/span><\/p>
