I’m a first-year graduate student in the Graduate School of Systems Life Sciences at Kyushu University, enrolled in the five-year integrated Master’s and PhD program. Our department is a perfect place for anyone fascinated by biology but interested in exploring it through an interdisciplinary lens. Here’s a peek into a day at Kyushu University with me!
こんにちは！システム生命科学府の１年生です。修士・博士課程が一緒になった５年間のコースに所属しています。私の所属している学府は生物学に関心のあるすべての人にとってパーフェクトなところです。しかし私は、複数の学問分野から学ぶことにも関心があります。さあ、私と一緒に九州大学の一日を覗いてみましょう！
7:00 AM – Morning start
My day begins with a quick breakfast. After that, I head to the lab, ready to kick things off.
私の一日は簡単な朝食から始まります。そのあと、ゼミへ向かい、その日の準備を始めます。
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM – Running experiments, 実験
From 9:00 to 11:00, I have two participant sessions scheduled for my experiments. Each participant stays for an hour, and I collect data during that time. You might be wondering, “What exactly are you researching?” My study sits at the intersection of psychology and biology. I am exploring how we humans make choices during uncertain situations.
この日はこの時間帯に、二人分の実験参加を予定していました。一時間の実験を行い、データを集めます。これを読んでいるあなたは「何を研究しているんだ？」と思うかもしれません。私の研究は心理学と生物学の分野にまたがっています。「不確かな状況でどのようにヒトが選択をしているのか」に関心を持っているのです。
I designed a task where participants choose one image from different pairs that I show them. While they are selecting, I collect eye movement data and biometric measurements like heart rate and galvanic skin conductance (think of it as similar to tools used in polygraph lie-detection machines). After these sessions, I clean up the lab, take a short coffee break, and chat with a friend.
参加者は違う２枚一組の写真から一つ選びます。実験参加者が写真を選択している間、目の動きと生体データ…例えば心拍数や皮膚電気反射（ポリグラフ噓発見器と似たようなものと考えてください）を計測します。それらが終われば、実験室を掃除し、コーヒーブレイクを満喫、そして友人と話します。
12:00 PM – 12:50 PM – Science English debate club
Around noon, I join the science English debate club, where I’m a teaching assistant (TA). Once a week, we gather together and discuss several science-related topics in English, and it’s a great chance to connect with friends from Japan and around the world. It’s one of my favorite parts of the day—lively and filled with fresh opinion exchange!
昼頃にはScience English DebateクラブにTAとして参加します。一週間に一回、英語で科学に関連した話題について話し合うのです。日本人や世界中から来た友人とつながる素晴らしい機会です。一日の中でも特に私が好きな時間です、活気があって新鮮な意見がたくさん出てきますから！
1:00 PM – Lunch Break
I warm up my bento lunch and head to the refresh room seats in the west zone. The view up there is stunning.
お弁当をレンチンして、ウエストゾーンのリフレッシュルームでお昼ご飯を食べます。部屋から見える景色はとてもきれいです。
2:00 PM – Back to the Lab, 再びゼミへ
Once I’m back in the lab, I spend some time reading a research paper.
一度研究室に戻り、論文を読んだりします。
2:50 PM – 4:10 PM – Bioethics class, 生命倫理の授業
At 2:50, I attend a lecture class (first-year graduate students still must take coursework!). Today’s class is on bioethics, which covers the ethical considerations we need to keep in mind while conducting research. These classes also give us a chance to meet other students and learn about what other labs are working on.
14:50頃に授業に参加します（修士１年はまだ授業を取らないといけないんです！）。その日の授業は生命倫理学についてのもので、研究をするうえで心に留めておかねばならない、倫理的なトピックについて学びます。こういった授業で他の生徒と会うことができるので、クラスメイトがゼミでどういった研究をしているのかを知ることができます。
4:30 PM – Lab meeting
In the afternoon, we have our weekly lab meeting. We usually have two types of presentations: journal club, where we hear about the relevant research papers, and progress reports, where we update everyone on our research projects. It’s a good way to learn from each other and bounce ideas around.
週に一度、研究室のミーティングがあります。ミーティングの内容について、一つは研究分野に関連した論文についてのプレゼンを聞く、もう一つは他のメンバーの研究の進み具合について聞くの２種類です。ほかの人から学んだり、意見をやり取りする良い機会です。
6:00 PM – Heading home, 帰宅
By 6:00, I’m wrapping up and heading home. Once I’m there, I start preparing dinner and catch up with friends. I usually have a video call with family back home. Evenings are the time to unwind and take a rest.
その日のやらなければならないことをまとめて、帰宅します。そして晩ごはんの準備をし、友人と連絡を取ったりします。家族とビデオ通話をする時もよくあります。夜はゆっくりする時間です。
